Experience

The record behind the judgement.

More than two decades of building, leading and operating businesses across the United States, Europe and international markets — and the specific experience that sits behind every decision I make today.

How I Work

Four habits that came out of carrying the outcome.

None of these are methods. They are what is left after twenty years of being answerable for the result rather than the recommendation.

01

Commercial clarity first

Before structure, before tools, before anything else: what does this business actually sell, to whom, and at what margin. Most problems presented as complicated turn out to be an unanswered version of that question.

02

The whole system, not one lane

Strategy, structure, people, risk and execution are not separate problems. Fixing one in isolation usually moves the failure somewhere less visible rather than removing it.

03

Decisions that survive contact

A decision is only as good as the day it has to be implemented by someone who was not in the room. Written down, specific, and capable of being repeated without me.

04

Ownership, not advice

I stay with a business after it launches and carry the decisions, the risk and the outcome. That changes what you are willing to recommend, and it is the difference this page is really about.

Areas of Experience

Where the twenty years were actually spent.

Six areas, each of them worked in rather than studied — and each one still in use.

01 · Strategy

Positioning & direction

What a business is for, who it serves, and what it deliberately will not do. Written before anything is built.

02 · Leadership

People & accountability

Recruiting, training and supervising staff, quality control, and answering for revenue against target.

03 · Operations

Budgets & the running of it

Overheads, margins, suppliers and the unglamorous mechanics that decide whether a good idea survives its second year.

04 · International

More than one market

Operating across countries, regulatory systems and business cultures at the same time, on both sides of the Atlantic.

05 · Regulation

High-consequence environments

Corporate and Fortune 500 client environments, a national tax administration, and study at IBFD in Amsterdam. Detail-punishing work that teaches you to check.

06 · Ownership

Carrying the risk

Businesses founded and run on both sides of the Atlantic. What it costs to make a decision when the money is your own, and how that changes every judgement afterwards.

Why It Matters

Experience is only useful if it changes what you do.

It shortens the diagnosis

Having seen the same failure in a tax office, a software environment and a start-up, you recognise it faster and stop treating symptoms.

It removes wishful thinking

Twenty years of numbers against target is a strong cure for optimism about how quickly something will work.

It makes the answer specific

General advice is what you give when you have not run the thing yourself. Specific answers come from having been accountable for one.

My Approach

I look at business through the full lens: strategy, systems, people, risk, execution, and growth.
